About our operation…..
We are relatively new to the business of selling eggs on a larger scale, although we have been raising chickens for a few years now. Our decision to expand the business was born because we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of people wanting to buy eggs from chickens that are not factory raised. What better place to do this than in the rural mountain countryside where the grass is always green, fresh breezes blow, and the temperatures are considerably cooler than along the beaches. This fresh mountain air is conducive to raising healthy happy free-range hens that produce our great tasting eggs.

Our flock consists mainly of Rhode Island Red hens which are bred for their egg laying ability. We also have a few black hens and the odd white hen as well. We are currently expanding our flock through purchasing more hens and also by raising our own chicks.
We currently have 4 hen houses (each with the capability of housing up to 100 hens each) that provide 2 square feet per hen. Each house contains 24 nesting boxes for our precious hens in which to lay their eggs. Note in the photo that we have made curtains for the nesting boxes because hens love their privacy during laying!
Besides the 3 regular hen houses, we do provide a separate hen house where we keep the brooding hens and hens with chicks. Another smaller hen house is used for any stock that might become ill. The isolation of sick hens is three-fold – to give us the opportunity to treat it more readily, to provide protection from the other birds, and to prevent cross-contamination of any contagious illnesses.
Our hens at Huevos de Amor San Jorge are very happy hens. They have access to the outside fenced area from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM each and every day. The fenced-in area is almost 2,000 square meters in size where they can forage for insects or eat some of the grass. We keep their outside area fenced to protect them from possible predators and to keep them from wandering off. We do supplement their diet with chicken feed – both kernel corn and ground corn fortified with vitamins and minerals.

A separate enclosed room attached to our garage is used for egg cleaning, packaging, preparation for transport and storage. Our eggs are not refrigerated but remain cool in the fresh mountain air. We guarantee that any eggs that we sell are less than 10 days old. Please see our FAQ’s Page for more information on whether eggs should be refrigerated or not.
Our water supply is piped onto the property from a nearby mountain stream, so our water is always fresh and clean. We provide water stations throughout the fenced-in area as well as within each of the hen houses.
Lastly, but very important, is the fact that we do provide employment to people from the area, thus helping our neighbors and the local economy. We also buy our supplies from local vendors in the neighboring towns of Guayabo and Liberia.
Over time, we have diversified our operation to include fresh free range broiler chickens, fresh naturally grown tilapia, seasonal fruit, and Tico style cheese and cuajada made from fresh cowʹs milk.
We look forward to doing business with you and invite you to visit our operation and our relatively unknown area near the mountains of Guanacaste.
